Ginger Coffee Rub

The Discovery. A drink from Indonesia turned into a rub.

I'm Philip, founder of ENAK Seasonings. This is the blend that surprises people more than any other.

The Story

In Indonesia, where my wife Maggie is from, there's a drink called kopi jahe. Ginger coffee.

I love coffee. I love ginger. I thought the two together sounded awful, until I tried it.

After seeing it on menus for a couple of years, one night at a cafe with Maggie and some friends I decided to be adventurous and give it a try. The taste stuck with me, even when we left Indonesia to return to Alabama.

Years later, building out the ENAK line, I saw someone cook with a chili coffee rub. My mind immediately went to that satisfying cup of ginger coffee. What if I turned that idea into a rub?

The night I made it I used it on burgers. I didn't tell Maggie that I'd made something new. She took one bite and her face lit up. A week or two later I cooked a steak at work and shared some with the boss. Same reaction. I knew.

Why It Works

You won't taste coffee when you bite in. It works behind the scenes, building a flavorful crust that unloads a powerful burst of rich flavor when it hits your tongue. What you will taste is the warm, subtle spice of ginger with the other Indonesian flavors working together in the background for a complex bite.

Built for steaks and burgers, I've used it on thighs, pork chops, salmon, and as an all-in-one fried rice seasoning.

Ginger Coffee Rub is a story worth tasting.
